What is Core JKD? Core JKD Concepts is dynamic martial art training stemming from Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do Concepts and covers the following ranges of combat against resisting opponents with or without weapons: weapons, kicking, boxing, trapping (also called the clinch) and ground fighting. In Core JKD you find your own path in martial arts training. Drop that cookie-cutter mentality where everyone maintains a strict, tense uniformity - where in nature is everything clean cut uniform? Unless you are a crystal lattice, intolerant, inflexible, then you belong to a species where your past experiences and current physical attributes (speed, flexibility range tendency, tactile awareness, strength, etc.) matter. That's right - matters. We don't discount your natural gifts and tendencies - even if you don't believe you have any - in the way we train you.
Some of your tendencies are enhanced while others are downplayed or de-trained should they interfere with efficiency or adaptation to range or attack flow. In short time we get to know you, we work to train you to find the most efficient way to train you to reach your potential. This unique methodology is something we've been doing for over a decade with hundreds upon hundreds of students from all walks of life. We don't pack you into a class and have you repeat movements that quite literally have little to do with the reality and brutality of a fight against resisting attackers. Our class sizes are small because we need space to move just like in the real world where sometimes escape is your most prudent method for safety. For those times when and where you cannot get away, we have proven methods for keeping your head and dealing with the situation in the most efficient manner possible. We also understand people train for all sorts of reasons. Some train for the physical conditioning aspect alone - and we have plenty of that! Some train for the comraderie of like-minded individuals and a family-type atmosphere - again, we've got you covered. Our hard trainers are very much a real family. Something we are proud of. Some train to enhance their skills in other martial arts - to which we've had many students for this purpose (don't worry, we won't tell). We welcome you. Some wish to train to enhance their competitive careers, we adapt our training for those individuals to that end to include competition rules that aren't present in real-world attacks. Some people simply want training in one of the most progressive, safety conscious and effective Self-Defense systems present in todays world - well, you guessed it (blushing) we've got you covered. What is Core JKD training like? Here's another testimony to our training...
Our Training... First and foremost we train without the ego. Too many times we have seen and experienced people in the martial arts training from the ego, that is, they have a goal of looking a certain way in front of people or wish to maintain a perceived apperance regardless of the safety issues it creates for those training with them. Ego trainers are injury trainers, meaning they train for a time, get injured frequently (or injure others) because of ego, and then don't train because they have to spend a long time to heal. It's one thing to train for a fight and another thing to fight a fight. We train at high levels of intensity, but we do it safely, with protective equipment when required. Most ego types don't train with equipment, thinking it gives them less of a status among their peers. These people end up neglecting training that could save them, should the need arise in a real confrontation. So, to train with us you must first not care how you look in front of other people. The students at the Academy are there to help you become a better, more well-rounded fighter. They are not there to "beat" you or to see how much better they are than you. In return, your unique physiology and inherent attributes help round us out. - each of us has something to offer whether you know it or not. Training at the Academy most always starts out with conditioning drills to strengthen wide range of motion and develop other attributes that will help you in the rest of the training. You won't find jumping jacks or the like here, only specialized conditioning drills that keep your body strong and mind fresh and aware. Trying to tell you what the rest of the training is like would take volumes to describe as it is varied and challenging, certainly more than we have space for here.
